SAMISH BAY, Wash. – No shellfish harvesting right now on Samish Bay, just days after Governor Jay Inslee visited to talk about improving water quality in the bay.
There’s about 10 times more bacteria than what the State Department of Health allows.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports the Department of Health closes shellfish harvesting in Samish Bay when the Samish River reaches flows that cause fecal coliform contamination.
That’s the bacteria found in human and animal waste that can contaminate shellfish and cause illness, espeically when oysters are eaten raw.
