BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Local police are warning of a phone scam making its way around town.

The Bellingham Police Department reports scammers are spoofing BPD’s main number and calling residents.

When a person answers, the scammers announce themselves as a police lieutenant and claim the person owes a fine due to missed jury duty.

The department says they do not call people about missing jury duty or attempt to get payment via gift card purchase.

Residents who do get this scam phone call should hang up immediately.
