OLYMPIA, Wash. — A new assessment of U.S. volcanoes labels 18 of them as “very high threat,” with Mount Baker and three others in Washington included.

The assessors considered recent volcanic activity and how close they are to people, focusing most on “potential severity” of an eruption, not which ones are the most likely to blow next.

Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier are in the top five on the danger list, right behind Hawaii’s Kilauea, which has been erupting this year.

Mount Baker and Glacier Peak in Snohomish County show up later in the Big 18, which the U.S. Geological Survey hasn’t updated since 2005.
