VANCOUVER, BC (AP) – Scientists will study how endangered killer whales respond to slower ship speeds and reduced underwater noise off southern British Columbia.

54 marine shipping companies signed up to take part in the voluntary study between August and October in the channel separating Vancouver Island from the San Juan Islands.

Existing data on underwater vessel noise shows it can interfere with the killer whale’s echo-location, affecting their ability to hunt, navigate and communicate.
