SEATTLE, Wash. — The Seattle City Council voted 8-1 yesterday to defund its police force, eliminating 100 jobs through layoffs and attrition.
Also yesterday, SPD chief Carmen Best, the City’s first black police chief, said she will retire September 2nd.
The cuts were strongly opposed by both Best and Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan.
Council member Kshama Sawant cast the lone “no” vote saying the cuts didn’t go far enough.
KIRO reports the cuts would target and cut officers who have complaints against them.
