SEATTLE, Wash. — An early Seattle voice in the civil rights movement has died.

Reverend Dr. Samuel McKinney was the former pastor of the Mount Zion Baptist Church.

McKinney marched in Seattle, Alabama, and Washington D.C. in the 1960’s, and was instrumental in bringing his college roommate Martin Luther King, Jr. to Seattle in 1961.

He helped launch the city’s first black-owned bank after local banks restricted loans to African Americans and served as an original member of the Seattle Human Rights Commission.

The Seattle Times reports McKinney passed away Saturday, at the age of 91.
