SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) – A judge in Seattle blocked a Justice Department decision that immigrant legal-rights organizations say would curtail much of the work they do.

The judge made the ruling following oral arguments in a lawsuit brought by the nonprofit Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.

The Justice Department last month told that group it cannot provide certain legal assistance to immigrants unless it actually becomes their lawyer.

The nonprofit says it doesn’t have the resources to do that.

The judge says the DOJ’s action would violate the group’s constitutional rights and force many immigrants to go without legal help.
