OLYMPIA, Wash. – State Senator Simon Sefzik has proposed an innovative grant program for agriculture producers affected by natural disasters.

Senate Bill 5936 was prompted by the November flooding in Whatcom County and could serve as a future model for recovery efforts statewide.

Sefzik says the bill aims to help farmers and agricultural producers who continue to face hardships after the flooding.

The bill would establish a $600,000 grant program that provides short-term financial assistance to farmers and ranchers.

A nearly identical House Bill is backed by local State Representative Alicia Rule.

The measure is scheduled for a vote Thursday afternoon, February 3rd.
