WASHINGTON, D.C. – New questions are being asked about an airline that serves the Bellingham International airport.

A CBS News 60 Minutes report called into question the Allegiant Airlines’ safety record Sunday, citing more than 100 serious mechanical incidents, some mid-air, between January 2016 and October 2017.

The report attributed that safety record in part to the 28-year average age of planes in its MD-80 fleet.

The airlines says it plans to retire all MD-80s by year end.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson is now calling for the FAA to investigate.

Allegiant flies to Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, and three California cities from Bellingham.
