ANACORTES, WA. – (KGMI.com) A Skagit County animal sanctuary is on the verge of closing its doors after more than two decades.
KIRO reports that the Because We Matter Exotic Animal Sanctuary may have to put down up to 85% of their animals next month because of a permitting issue.
The rescue gets most of its funding from providing educational tours through Airbnb, but the county informed them that they need to cease operations and apply for a special use permit.
Without the tour revenue, the sanctuary is relying solely on donations.
They are also facing more trouble as a neighbor is suing them, demanding that their wolf dogs be removed.
The rescue says it is costing them $50,000 a month to care for its animals.
