MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Rather than establishing a winter homeless shelter, Skagit County plans to hand out motel vouchers to keep the homeless population safe in cold weather.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports there is no space available to host a traditional shelter in a safe way to prevent the spread of COVID-19, so county funding will go toward a handful of motel voucher programs instead.

The county plans to pay for up to 80 motel rooms this winter.
