MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — The demand for grain varieties grown in the Skagit Valley is on the rise.

U.S. Representatives Rick Larsen and Suzan DelBene hosted a roundtable discussion last week at Farmstrong Brewing in Mount Vernon where the Skagit Valley Herald says growers and business owners shared the success of the new grain economy.

The grains are grown, milled and processed locally to be produced into bread, beer and other products.

Dave Hedlin says his farm previously grew wheat as a rotation crop to enrich soil and reduce disease, but now they’re growing it for profit.
