MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Skagit County’s COVID-19 numbers are falling, but just when the county moves two Phase 3 is unclear.

The most recent state data shows the county has recorded 27 cases per 100,000 over the past 14 days, nearly meeting the Safe Start goal of 25.

The county meets all the other metrics required to move to Phase 3, but the statewide pause on reopenings was extended indefinitely in August.

Two County Commissions told the Skagit Valley Herald that they are comfortable remaining in Phase 2 and support state policy focused on reopening schools over businesses.

But Commissioner Ken Dahlstedt said if the county can keep its cases low, it should be allowed to move to Phase 3.

A county spokesperson said Public Health leadership has no plans to lobby the governor to reopen.
