A Skagit County dentist must pay a fine and get continuing education after performing a root canal that the Department of Health says injured the woman’s nerve.

The Department says Brandon Atkinson gave a woman a root canal in early December 2015, and used a sealer applicator he’d never used before.

When the woman came back complaining of continued pain and numbness, the Department says Atkinson failed to properly diagnose the nerve injury and didn’t refer her to a specialist in a timely manner.

It wasn’t until July 2016 that the woman was referred to an oral surgeon and diagnosed with the nerve injury.
