HAMILTON, Wash. — Hamilton is now annexing a property that a nonprofit bought in hopes of moving the flood-prone community.

The town has a history of significant flooding from the Skagit River, and the Skagit Valley Herald says the goal of the annexation is to provide an option for residents to move to higher ground.

Seattle-based land conservancy group Forterra purchased the 45-acre property north of Highway 20 in March.

Forterra and Hamilton want to use the property to build a green development that’s primarily residential with the potential for some commercial space.

Town residents would have first pick of homes.
