BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Putting some soap in a fountain or tossing a coin in with a wish may seem harmless but the City of Bellingham is asking you to not do it.

Someone poured soap in the Fountain District fountain last weekend and a photo of the foamy mess got hundreds of “likes” on social media.

But the Parks and Recreation Department says putting substances in a fountain wreaks havoc with the system’s equipment and requires lots of resources to clean and repair.

And soap and other foreign substances or objects aren’t good for the ecosystem downstream.

They’re asking everyone to respect the parks, their fountains and other structures.
