BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) – As the weather heats up, law enforcement is stepping up efforts to find boaters under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Special patrols start this coming weekend and run on several weekends through August 19th.
Boaters suspected of being intoxicated who refuse a breath or blood test face a more thanĀ $2,000 penalty.
A boating under the influence conviction is punishable by a maximum fine of five-thousand dollars and a year in jail.
The law applies to all boats, including kayaks; canoes; rowboats and inflatable fishing rafts.
