BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Whatcom County Health Department is warning about a dangerous outbreak of salmonella that could be linked to onions.
The Health Department says there’s been an abnormally high number of salmonella cases locally since July 1st.
On Saturday, the FDA issued a notice of a Salmonella Newport outbreak that has sickened almost 400 people from 34 states and is also linked to an outbreak in Canada.
Thomson International of Bakersfield, California has been identified as the likely source of potentially contaminated red onions.
The Whatcom County Food Safety Program has forwarded the FDA recall notice to local food establishments.
Consumers are advised to throw away red, white, yellow or sweet onions from Thomson International or any products which may contain them.
Onions where place of origin is unknown should also be thrown out.
More information is available on the FDA recall website.
