SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – People who live in the Spokane suburb of Airway Heights can drink tap water again.

They were told not to drink city water after Fairchild Air Force Base found groundwater tainted with two industrial chemicals.

They came from firefighting foam and nonstick cookware.

City Manager Albert Tripp told KREM-T-V they have a plan to keep this from happening again.

“The testing we’ve been doing over the last three weeks, we’re going to continue doing that on a go-for-it basis. And certainly with respect to the wells we were using that pull these contaminants into the water distribution system, those have been off since we found out these chemicals were present.”

The latest round of tests found 20 of 21 samples at acceptable levels for the compounds.

The site where one sample had contamination above federal guidelines is now shut down.
