LUMMI ISLAND, Wash. — The Lummi Nation shellfish beds in Portage Bay will open for harvest in April.

The Department of Health is lifting spring season harvest restrictions on almost 800 acres of shellfish beds.

The Whatcom County Public Works Department says the community’s work to improve the water quality in Portage Bay and the Nooksack River watershed has paid off.

Merle Jefferson with Lummi Natural Resources calls it “a big positive change for the Lummi People,” who have faced nearly $1 million in economic losses for decades because of the spring closures.
