OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) – In Washington state, the Department of Corrections says 14 inmates are still serving life without parole for crimes committed while they were juveniles.

State lawmakers revised a sentencing statute for 16- and 17-year-old offenders convicted of first-degree murder so they would not get automatic life sentences.

They also allowed those who have been held for over 20 years to petition for release.

Seventeen juveniles have been resentenced, and two received new life-without-parole terms.
