BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Plans are in motion to redevelop the Aloha Motel property on Samish Way.

The Washington State Housing Finance Commission announced that it has approved nearly $15 million to fund the first phase of the project, which will establish 69 apartment units on the site.

The completed project is planned to have a total of 150 units available for people with a range of incomes.

The commission says the project will serve as the anchor for local redevelopment that will turn the Samish Way area into a walkable neighborhood.

The City of Bellingham condemned the Aloha Motel in 2014, calling it a blight on the neighborhood due to methamphetamine contamination.
