OLYMPIA (AP) – State lawmakers in Olympia are looking to “ban the box.”

They support legislation that keeps employers from being able to force applicants to check a box if they have a criminal history.

The State Attorney General’s Office would oversee enforcing the new rule by imposing warnings and fines.

Exceptions would include jobs in law enforcement, state agencies, schools, and other fields that deal with kids and vulnerable adults.

The Senate Bill cleared that chamber by one vote – A similar measure awaits action in the House.
