OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The mandate for people to carry health insurance or face tax penalties ended yesterday for most, but not all Americans.

Some states are keeping the individual mandate that had been in effect since 2014 under the Affordable Care Act but was eliminated by Republican tax reform passed in 2017.

Washington State has no income tax, leaving it without a readily available method for enforcing a mandate.

The Legislature has reportedly asked a task force to develop other options for “state enforcement of the requirement to maintain minimum essential coverage.”
