TACOMA, Wash (AP) – A Tacoma jury found the state responsible for the death of a man whose son killed him months after being released from a state psychiatric hospital.
The News Tribune reports jurors awarded nearly $3 million in damages to Robert Meline’s family.
The family sued Western State Hospital, arguing it wrongly released Jonathan Meline from commitment, even though they knew the son suffered from delusions and violent behavior.
Police say he killed his father with a hatchet, but was found not guilty by reason of insanity and is back at Western State.
