OLYMPIA, Wash. — State Rep. Luanne Van Werven of Lynden has been disciplined for breaking an ethics law.

The 42nd District Republican has since voluntarily resigned from her appointed position on Washington’s Legislative Ethics Board.

She still holds her position as state representative.

Van Werven was ordered to pay a $300 fine, half of which will be suspended if she does not commit another ethics violation in the next five years.

The board released an opinion finding Van Werven guilty of using taxpayer resources for her re-election campaign.

She tells KGMI that she owns her mistake and she accepts the board’s finding.

She filmed a campaign video from inside her legislative office on the grounds of the State Capitol, which is in direct violation of the state’s Ethics in Public Service Act.

A Bellingham resident first filed the complaint in June.
