OLYMPIA, Wash. — A new report shows many of the state’s salmon populations are still teetering on the brink of extinction.
The Salmon Recovery Office report shows that 10 of the 14 species of threatened or endangered salmon and steelhead in Washington are not making progress, and 5 are in crisis.
The report noted the salmon’s predicament is expected to worsen as the climate warms and mountain glaciers disappear and human populations increase.
The news wasn’t all bad, however.
The report also highlighted accomplishments of the past 20 years and concludes that the state has been making steady progress restoring habitat.
