OLYMPIA, Wash. — As a state task force meant to protect orcas weighs potential recommendations to give the governor, another orca is sick and several others are pregnant in an endangered family of southern resident killer whales.
After the death of a newborn and a young ailing orca in recent months, researchers tell The Seattle Times they are concerned for the health of three currently pregnant orca mothers .
Governor Inslee’s task force is taking public comment via this website on dozens of ideas including supporting legislation making it easier to kill sea lions that eat salmon, restoring habitat and more.
The task force has recently drafted a fifty-page report detailing the orca health problem and describing their recommendations in detail, which is viewable in full here.
