OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Senate is considering Governor Inslee’s request for funding to help restart the Intalco Aluminum smelter at Cherry Point.

A supplemental budget proposal includes $10 million that would help pay for efficiency upgrades at the idled plant.

Port of Bellingham Director of Economic Development Don Goldberg earlier told KGMI that it would make Intalco one of only two “green smelters” in the nation.

“It would reduce the carbon output by over 65 percent or approximately 750,000 cubic tons a year reduction,” said Goldberg.

Blue Wolf Capital Investments continues to negotiate a deal to buy the smelter from Alcoa and restore its operations and hundreds of jobs.
