SPOKANE, WASH. (AP) – A historic settlement will benefit nearly 900 State Patrol troopers and applicants who served in the military.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs say it’s the largest settlement in the history of the federal veterans’ employment rights law.

The State Patrol didn’t give qualified veterans hiring and promotion preference required by state law.

The state will pay $13 million to compensate impacted State Patrol employees and applicants.
