SEATTLE, Wash. — Seismologists say Mount Baker and Washington’s other volcanoes aren’t being monitored closely enough for possible eruptions.

Pacific Northwest Seismic Network Director Harold Tobin tells KOMO News that it is possible we’ll see another Mount St. Helens-like eruption during our lifetimes, and we could have advance warning.

Congress allocated $55 million for nationwide volcano monitoring last year, but the money hasn’t all been spent.

Tobin says he’d like to see at least a dozen monitoring stations on each of Washington’s five volcanoes.
