WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – As expected, the excessive heat watch has been upgraded to a warning for Whatcom County and Western Washington starting Friday.

Temperatures are forecast to reach 100 or more in parts of Whatcom County , especially inland.

Residents should check on the most vulnerable including infants and people over 65, those with illnesses or who are overweight.

Limit physical exercise during the hottest parts of the day, and don’t just rely on fans in your home.

Light-colored and loose-fitting clothing can help keep you cool especially if you are outside.

Proper hydration is important, so drink plenty of water and replenish salts and minerals with some Gatorade or other sports drinks.

Take cool showers or baths if you don’t have air conditioning and get to air conditioned spaces like the mall if you can.

Don’t leave children or pets in your car even if the windows are cracked.

Check the Whatcom County Health Department’s website for more tips on how to stay cool and how to spot signs of heat-related illness.
