NORTH CASCADES, Wash. – A search and rescue team saved the day for an hiker in the North Cascades.

The team from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island rescued a 73-year-old woman on the Yellow Aster Butte trail after she broke her ankle on Sunday, September 18th.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s office notified the SAR crew at around 6:30 p.m. and high winds forced them to land their helicopter on the crest of a ridge above the trail northeast of Mount Baker.

They were able to carry the woman to the aircraft and transported her to Peacehealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham.

Naval Air State Whidbey Island has conducted 17 rescues so far this year.
