DARRINGTON, Wash. – Police arrested three children that investigators say are likely responsible for at least $500,000 in damage to a Darrington school.

KOMO reports the suspected vandals are a 13- and 14-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office believes they spent hours in Darrington Elementary School Sunday morning wreaking havoc.

“When you see something like this, you just kinda have to ask why?”

Superintendent Buck Marsh says aside from breaking windows and electronics, the vandals also flooded a classroom, set off several fire extinguishers and spread paint throughout the cafeteria.

“To work so hard to try to improve our facilities, then to see how much destruction can be taken out on a school in just a morning… It’s pretty disheartening.”

Marsh expects the damage estimate to rise, especially as they scramble to fix everything before school starts in a month.
