MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — The Tulip Festival is over, but crews are already preparing for next year.

The Washington Department of Transportation says crews from Granite Construction will begin repaving the busy State Route 536 in Mount Vernon on May 5 with a projected end date of May 10.

Crews will be ripping out old asphalt and replacing it with new, smooth material after they make necessary repairs to the road base between the Skagit River Bridge and I-5.

Motorists can expect lane reductions and the occasional full highway closure with signed detours in place.
