SEATTLE, Wash. — A trail runner who slipped on ice and broke his leg on a remote trail on the Olympic Peninsula crawled for nearly 10 hours before he was rescued.
Joseph Oldendorf told KIRO he didn’t have cellphone service and saw crawling as the only way he was going to get help.
The 26-year-old was 12 miles into a run on the Duckabush Trail near Hood Canal when he broke his leg at about 6 p.m. Friday.
He crawled until he could call for help almost seven hours later.
Oldendorf kept crawling until ground rescue crews found him at 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
A Coast Guard Helicopter from Port Angeles airlifted him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and he has since been released.
