BELLINGHAM, Wash. — It turns out that a trailer being towed by an SUV that crashed into another vehicle on I-5 in Bellingham Tuesday had just been stolen.

State Patrol Trooper Rocky Oliphant tweets that the double-axle trailer’s owner had left it on the shoulder of the interstate 30 minutes before it was stolen.

The SUV driver only made it about 7 miles with the stolen trailer before losing control and crashing into a sedan near Iowa Street in Bellingham.

The two vehicles left the northbound lanes and hit a guard rail with the car wedged on its side between the SUV and the trailer.

There were only minor injuries.

The case has been referred to the prosecutor for possible criminal charges.
