OTTAWA, Canada – Travel restrictions at the US border with Canada will remain in place.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the border will stay closed to non-essential travel at least until July 21st.

Trudeau says he has to put the safety of Canadians first by preventing the spread of Covid-19 variants.

He says a lot is riding on how fully they’re able to vaccinate the Canadian population and wants to see a 75 percent first vaccination rate before opening back up.

New rules for travelers who’ve been fully vaccinated are expected to be announced today.
