BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A totem pole is traveling from Lummi Nation to Pittsburgh in protest of fossil fuels.
Tribal member Jewell James was the head carver. “We’re killing off all those cultures that would protect the earth, reinforcing the cultures that destroy the earth,” James said, “and as consequence creating a world our children can’t live in.”
It made stops in Vancouver, Washington and Portland to protest proposed oil, coal and methanol projects for that area.
It will be displayed in Pittsburgh starting October 25th.
