WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – An inexperienced semi driver delivering aluminum bars to the Alcoa smelter in Ferndale rolled his truck at the corner of Smith and Hovander Roads Tuesday morning.

Undersheriff Jeff Parks says the driver from out of state didn’t allow himself enough room for the sharp right turn and his trailer’s right wheels sank into the shoulder.

The 24 ton load pulled the entire truck into the ditch and onto its top and partially submerged in water in the ditch.

The load had to be cut free to remove the truck and the road is closed while the heavy pieces are removed and a diesel spill is cleaned up.

Neither the driver or his training partner were seriously hurt.

The driver was ticketed.
