WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – A tsunami advisory has been issued for the Washington coast including the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the San Juan Islands.
The risk to Whatcom County appears low, but the Emergency Management Division says people should stay off local beaches for most of the day.
The advisory starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 15th, and we could see multiple waves occurring for up to five hours.
Tsunami waves of 1 to 2 feet and associated strong currents could occur.
Tsunami sirens are not expected to sound during this event.
A tsunami was generated by an undersea volcanic eruption near the nation of Tonga and waves have been moving across the Pacific.
