BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Voter turnout in this midterm election in Washington so far is dominated by older demographics.
In Whatcom County, 29.5% of all eligible voters have returned their ballot, above the statewide number of 25.5%.
The statistics show a clear trend that voting increases with age, as voters aged 65 and older have by far the current highest turnout with nearly 48% returning ballots at this point.
The percentages continually decrease with each age demographic, with the lowest percentage of just over eight belonging to 18 to 24 year-old voters.
The Washington Secretary of State reports the turnout pace at this point is lower than the previous midterm of 2018.
The state saw it’s highest turnout for a midterm election since 1970 that year, with a total of 40.8% of voters participating.
