SEATTLE, Wash. — The University of Washington is launching the first clinical trial for a male birth control gel meant to be absorbed through the upper arms and shoulders.
Dr. Stephanie Page of UW says the gel contains both testosterone and progestin which is intended to block the production of sperm.
Seattle, Los Angeles and Kansas City plan to enroll couples to test the safety and efficacy of the birth control.
Dr. William Bremner, who will oversee the trial at UW alongside Page, says it’s a “misperception” that men don’t care about, or are afraid of, tools to control their fertility.
The trial will later include cities worldwide with results expected in 2022.
