PORTLAND, Ore. – Western Washington University junior Shearyna Labasan did a little bit of everything in the Vikings doubleheader sweep over Concordia Saturday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball action at Porter Park at Hilken Community Stadium. WWU won both games of the doubleheader by matching scores of 6-2.
With their third win in the last four games, the Vikings improved to 15-30 overall and 9-17 in GNAC play. Concordia drops to 20-26 on the season and 7-17 in league play.
Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) combined to go 5-for-7 with 4 runs scored, one home run and 3 RBI at the plate, and allowed one unearned run in 5.0 innings of relief work in the circle. Labasan is now batting .417 (55-for-132) on the season and is WWU’s leading pitcher with 27 appearances (21 starts) and 136.0 innings pitched (5-17, 3.65 ERA, 2 SV).
Freshman pitcher Kira Doan (Brier, WA/Mountlake Terrace) earned the win in both games of the doubleheader, combining to scatter 9 hits and allow 3 runs (2 ER) in 9.0 innings.
Western closes out the 2018 season tomorrow at Western Oregon (25-23, 13-13 GNAC) in Monmouth, Oregon, with the GNAC doubleheader starting at 1 pm. The game can be followed with a live webcast and live stats at GNAC.tv.

After trailing early in the game, the Vikings scored in four consecutive innings, including a 3-run 4th inning, to beat Concordia 6-2 in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Shearyna Labasan went 2-for-4 at the plate, with 3 RBI and hit her 4th home run of the season to help lead the Vikings to the victory. The junior also tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to close out the victory.
Freshman pitcher Kira Doan (3-4) recorded the win in the circle allowing 6 hits and 2 runs (1 ER) in 5.0 innings.
The Vikings out-hit the Cavaliers 10-7, with eight different WWU players recording a hit.
Concordia jumped out to the early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Center fielder Macy Besuyen drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run, but Doan escaped further damage when she stranded the bases loaded.
Western tied the game in the 3rd inning on a run-scoring single by senior designated player Carlie Richards (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin).
With the game tied 1-1, the Vikings opened the game up scoring 5 runs over their next three at-bats, including 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning. Labasan provided the big hit with a 2-run, 2-out single in the 4th inning to extend the lead to 4-1.
Concordia scored a run on 3 hits in the bottom of the 5th inning, Doan again escaped damage allowing only the one run.
Labasan allowed just two baserunners (H, BB) in her 2.0 innings of relief work to close out the WWU victory.
CU starter Samantha Byron (4-6) was saddled with the loss allowing 8 hits and 4 runs in 3.0 innings. Left fielder Kelsie Merritt (2-for-4) and right fielder Alexandria Steen (2-for-4, R, 2B) each recorded multi-hit games for the Cavaliers.
Western Washington 6, Concordia 2 (April 28, 2018 at Portland, OR)
The Vikings completed the doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap, with a 5-run 4th inning proving too much for the Cavaliers to overcome.
The Vikings broke the scoreless tie with single tallies in the 3rd and 4th innings. Shearyna Labasan led off the 3rd inning with a single and moved into scoring position by stealing second base. After a walk to Kira Doan and a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Rylie Wales (Snohomish, WA), sophomore shortstop Paityn Cyr (Mount Vernon, WA) drove in the go-ahead run with a single through the left side of the infield.
After a 19-minute rain delay in the top of the 4th inning, the Vikings opened the game up with a 5-run inning to take a 6-0 lead. Lauren Lo (Issaquah, WA/Skyline) provided a 2-run double to left-center field, and the other 3 runs scored on wild pitches.
Concordia got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 4th and scored again in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Labasan went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored and reach base safely in all four of her plate appearances. She recorded her second save of the season and fourth of her career (3rd-most in WWU history) allowing one unearned run in 3.0 innings.
Doan (4-4) recorded her second win of the day, allowing one run in 4.0 innings. She tied her career-high with 6 strikeouts and issued 3 walks.
Concordia left fielder Kelsie Merritt went 2-for-4 to lead the Cavaliers at the plate. Mckenzie Smith (8-8) recorded the loss allowing 5 hits and 5 runs (4 ER) in her 3.1-inning start.
