BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Potentially toxic algae blooms have popped up in Bellingham Bay.
The Department of Ecology reports the red-brown blooms are often associated with warmer temperatures.
People exposed to high levels of the toxins can get sick. Exposure can come from ingesting contaminated water and shellfish.
Scientists recently found red-brown algae blooms in Bellingham and Samish Bays, East Sound, Marrowstone Island, Liberty Bay and finger inlets in South Sound.
