OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) – You now have to dial all 10 digits when making a phone call, even for local calls.

The change for western Washington went into effect Saturday.

A new area code – 564 – is being added throughout the region, and it’s now necessary to dial the area code for all calls.

Officials say alarm, security and medical alert systems should be checked to make sure they are unaffected by 10-digit dialing.
