SPOKANE, Wash. – In just one year, Washington drivers put the Voyager 1’s 40-year journey to shame.

The Spokesman Review reports Washington drivers traveled more than 60 billion miles in 2016.

For perspective, the Voyager left our solar system in 2012 and is currently in interstellar space, at a measly 13 billion miles away.

A report by the Department of Transportation shows 2016 set a record, thanks in part to a growing economy and population, and plummeting gas prices.

Drivers today are paying about $0.40 more for gas than this time last year, at an average of $2.99 in Bellingham.
