WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amtrak service through Bellingham likely won’t be restored until late this year, but it could see fewer interruptions when it does resume.

Senator Maria Cantwell’s office says the state is receiving $3.8 million from the federal government to continue protecting tracks from landslides.

Winter storms frequently cause slides between Seattle and Everett that block rail traffic, including Amtrak and commuter rail service.

The funds will go toward three catchment walls along the tracks.

Another $10 million will go toward adding track that will allow more trains and fewer delays between Seattle and Portland.

The funding is part of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure package.
