OLYMPIA, Wash. — Hairstylists descended on the state capitol yesterday for a hearing on a controversial bill that would increase taxes on stylists who rent chairs or booths from salon owners.
KING 5 reports the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Karen Keiser (D) of Des Moines, says the goal was to even the playing field but now she’s backing off from parts of the bill.
She says a provision that would have made booth renting illegal has been removed and other changes will be made.
The bill still removes certain exemptions for salon owners who rent their space, including workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance and business and occupation taxes.
Salon owners and stylists worry it will put them out of business.
