OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington is among 22 states that are pledging to back California in its showdown with the Trump Administration over plans to relax vehicle mileage standards.
The administration intends to freeze tougher mileage standards that were set under former President Barack Obama to combat climate change, saying American consumers want bigger, gas-guzzling SUVs and pickup trucks.
And it argues that demanding more fuel-efficient vehicles will drive up costs and keep less-safe, older vehicles on the road longer.
Many engineers have challenged that claim.
